Dynalectric: Work Beyond Wiring at Children's Hospital
Sometimes, in our everyday jobs, we complete projects that make us feel good about reaching a milestone or attaining a goal. In other instances, it is who we are working for that makes us feel as good, if not better, than what we have accomplished.

Dynalectric is currently working on several electrical contracts for Children’s Hospital in Columbus. These jobs go well beyond the intricate wiring and circuitry work that is required: They give Dynalectric the opportunity - in an indirect way - to help children in the community.
"At Dynalectric, we feel fortunate to assist such a vital and important institution in this community,” said Gene Belew, Dynalectric president. "So many of us have children or know children and families who have benefited from the high level of care they’ve received at Children’s Hospital. Their work is second to none, and we’re pleased to help support the Hospital through our work,” Belew remarked.
Dynalectric project executive, Frank Sekella, is responsible for managing Dynalectric’s day-to-day work at Children’s Hospital. Among Dynalectric’s current projects are the installation of a new power grid, generator and UPS (uninterruptable power system) for the Hospital’s information services.
"Our original electrical system no longer supports the needs of the hospital due to increased automation and data processing applications,” explained Scott Reifeis, Children’s Hospital architect. "We cannot afford to experience downtime with such vital information systems, so Dynalectric is installing the new system alongside the existing electrical network,” Reifeis said. The new system is dedicated to data processing and information systems, and was designed with additional capacity to allow for future growth. These new installation projects were stimulated by the need to protect the Hospital and its systems prior to Y2K.
Dynalectric is also working as the prime electrical contractor on the expansion of Children’s Hospital’s MRI building, running all of the electrical wiring for the new building and backfeeding the existing systems. "Part of this project will also require Dynalectric to install and integrate a two-engine generator plant to support the new NICU/PICU and information services loads,” Reifies said.
Finally, Dynalectric is working as electrical sub-contractor to Bovis Construction on the Children’s Hospital NICU/PICU addition. "This 80,000-square-foot addition is being built on top of the existing surgery building and replaces beds from elsewhere in the Hospital,” said Carl Jennings, senior project manager for Bovis Construction. Dynalectric is responsible for furnishing and installing all electrical systems for the new structure, and for tying in the new wiring to the Hospital’s existing switch gear. "This project is very challenging from a coordination standpoint, and as it relates to the sensitive Hospital environment,” said Judy Zitesman, project coordinator for Children’s Hospital. "Great care must be taken not to compromise services in the existing surgery building.”
That patient care is important to Dynalectric, too. "Children’s Hospital is world-class. We are fortunate to have that level of care here in Columbus,” said Belew. "Through our electrical work here, we are pleased not only to help Children’s Hospital, but at the same time, to give something back to the children, as well.”
